Language as a Co-Author of Reality: The Deep Essence of the “Lens”<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Many people are used to thinking that language is just a “postal service” that delivers thoughts from one person to another. However, supporters of linguistic relativity argue: language is not a postman \u2014 it is an architect.<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Economy of Attention<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Our brain is lazy and tries to conserve resources. Language helps it by creating “ready-made categories.” If your language has 20 words for the states of snow (as some northern peoples do), your brain automatically learns to notice the density, moisture, and texture of a snowdrift. Where a foreigner sees just a “white field,” a native speaker sees a complex structure.<\/span><\/p>\n

The point: Language dictates what we should pay attention to and what we can ignore.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Forming a “Coordinate Grid”<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Language gives us a coordinate system for understanding abstract concepts: time, cause-and-effect relationships, and responsibility.<\/span><\/p>\n

If a language focuses on the action (e.g., “the vase broke”), we perceive the world as a series of events.<\/span>
\nIf a language focuses on the agent (e.g., “he broke the vase”), we perceive the world through the lens of personal guilt and control.<\/span>
\nThis changes not only our speech but also our behavior, justice, and even ethics.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Emotional Landscape<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

There are concepts that cannot be adequately translated. For example, the Portuguese word <\/span>saudade<\/span><\/em> (a deep longing for something lost or never existed) or the German <\/span>Schadenfreude<\/span><\/em> (joy at another’s misfortune). When we learn these words, we don’t just memorize sounds \u2014 we build new “shelves” for feelings in our consciousness. We begin to feel these emotions more clearly because now they have a name.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Social “Programming”<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Language carries a cultural code. The use of polite forms (like “vy” and “ty” in Russian or complex levels of honorifics in Japanese) forces us to constantly assess hierarchy and distance between people. A speaker of a language where such distinctions don’t exist sees the world as more egalitarian (equal), simply because their “lens” doesn’t divide people into ranks with every address.<\/span><\/p>\n

Conclusion: Why Do We Need to Know This?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The essence of the concept of “language as a lens” is that we do not see the world as it is \u2014 we see the world as our language is.<\/span><\/p>\n
